Cattle Muster

Round up cattle on horseback

Chapman Valley Cattle Muster

Join the fifth and sixth generations of the Chapman family on an authentic Australian cattle mustering experience! A tradition that has been upheld for 184 years, rounding up the cattle on horseback is a huge event on the farm – and we’re inviting you along for the ride!

Spend multiple days in the saddle searching for and bringing in the cattle from all over the property, ready for drenching, drafting and preparing for the local cattle sales! Then at night sit around the campfire and discuss the day’s events with your fellow cowgirls and cowboys.

You’ll be assigned your own horse to care for and ride during the muster. This includes catching, grooming and saddling at the start and the end of the day.

About The Ride

For six generations (since the year 1840) Chapman Valley has been an actively running beef cattle farm. Our ancestors, who were dairy-farmers in England, relocated to Australia to find new opportunities. They settled on this 6,000 acre property and stocked it with cattle. Since then the farm has been passed down from generation to generation, all the time keeping things running from the back of a horse. In this fast paced world, we find rounding up the cattle on horseback is still the best way to do things. Not only is it more gentle and kind on the cattle, but it’s more fun for the humans too!

In this authentic horseback Cattle Mustering experience, you’ll kick off your day with a hearty BBQ breakfast before heading over to the horse yards to get ready for the day’s adventures. You’ll be given your own horse to care for, and under the tuition of our helpful guides you’ll groom and saddle your noble steed before mounting up and riding out in search for the cattle.

About the Horses

We use the same horses on our Cattle Muster as we do on our everyday trail rides. This means they’re fit, experienced and reliable. They love their job, but the Cattle Musters are like a holiday for them and they are in their absolute element! On all of our rides, we encourage our horses to be responsive to their rider, to avoid the nose-to-tail grind and so the opportunity to spread out and roam the paddocks looking for cattle is right up their alley! You’ll find a mix of breeds in our herd, from Australian Stock Horses and Quarter Horses to our beautiful Shire and Clydie Xs. They range from steady quiet beginner’s horses to more responsive experienced rider’s horses, so there’s always a great match to be found.

Accommodation & Facilities

Our brand new six-bedroom accommodation, “The Drover’s Quarters”, overlooks the horse yards, so you can quietly snuggle up on the couch to watch the horses gather for their breakfast with coffee in hand. You’ll have your own private bedroom with a comfy queen/double bed, crisp clean sheets & cozy blankets & doona. Located next door to the camp kitchen where our delicious meals are served up, and nearby to our amenities block where you can enjoy hot showers & flushing toilets.

Please note, accommodation is included on the two and three day cattle musters only. It can be booked separately for the one day cattle muster.

Payment Plans

To instantly reserve your spot, you can pay in full. This is the most cost effective way to book, and guarantees your spot instantly (important when new dates are released, as it’s often a bit of a hectic scramble of people trying to grab a spot!).

We also offer payment plans! Check out the Info Pack below, then email us at ride@chapmanvalleyhorseriding.com to set up a payment plan.

Group Size

The cattle musters that are held with Chapman Valley’s horses are limited to a maximum of 6 guests, plus 2 guides. BYO Horse Cattle Musters may be larger groups (up to 10 horses) depending on the event’s circumstances.

Riding Ability

Riders must be able to do a rising trot, to ensure we can increase the speed if need be (e.g if we need to cover ground more quickly, or to keep up if the cattle try to run away). The exception to this is our one-day muster, which is suitable to beginners.

The majority of the riding will be at a slower pace (walking) in order to prevent distressing the livestock or over-exerting the horses & working dogs.
Expect to be in the saddle for 5-7 hours each day, so be sure to get a few rides in before the departure date to get saddle fit.
Minimum age 15yo.

Frequently Asked Questions

Our beautiful Drover’s Quarters building provides a comfortable, homely resting place at the end of a long day in the saddle. It’s a six bedroom building, with a communal living space where you can curl up to read a book, make a cup of tea at the coffee station, or sit around the table with your fellow riders to chat about the day’s adventures. Each room is identical, with a queen bed and a single trundle bed. You can tell us at the time of making your booking whether you’ll be travelling with a companion, and whether you’d like to share a room, and a bed (we don’t like to assume!).

There are toilets and showers on site, in a separate building, approximately 100m from the Drovers Quarters.

Accommodation is provided on the two and three day cattle musters. Check-in is 3pm the day before the event, and check-out is 10am the morning of the final day. Extra nights can be added at the time of making your booking if you’d prefer not to drive home after the event.

Accommodation is not included in the one day muster, but can be booked separately.

Maybe, maybe not. This will depend on a number of factors;  individual horse’s fitness levels, the terrain covered each day, and where the horse is up to in their rest schedule. We may also feel that you may be better matched to another horse in our team, and will often shuffle riders to find the ultimate fit.

3 day muster: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner on day 1 and 2. On the last day (day 3) breakfast and lunch are included, but be sure to bring dinner if you book the extra night.

2 day muster: Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included on the first day. Breakfast and lunch (no dinner) on the second day. Be sure to bring dinner if you book the extra night.

1 day muster: Lunch and snacks are included on the day. Please note no breakfast or dinner is provided.

Yes. All sheets, blankets and doonas are already made up in your private room (2 and 3 day musters only). We also provide towels, please BYO toiletries.

Yes, so long as it meets our Accepted Helmet Policy and is cleared by the guides on the day as being in good condition.

No. Our horses have individual saddles, which are professionally fitted to their shape. You may bring accessories for medical reasons, for example specific stirrups for ankle injuries, seat covers/padding, so long as the guides on the day deem the equipment as safe to use.

Yes – but this is a separate event. We run two types of musters … one where we provide the horses, and another separate event for those who have their own horse. The information on this page is for those who are riding our horses – please see the Holiday with your Horse page for information about bringing your horse to Chapman Valley.

We ask that those coming on the two and three day cattle musters are able to at least be able to confidently do a rising trot, for safety reasons. However, the majority of this ride is walking pace. Our horses cover up to 30km in a day, sometimes on back-to-back days on these events, over terrain of varying difficulty. Likewise, the goal of the adventure is to find and round up the cattle. They will often be hiding in bushes on the side of the track, so we take it mice and slow to listen and look carefully for signs of where they might be.

If riders are capable, there may be opportunities for some trotting and cantering, however this depends on many factors. Come prepared for a slow, relaxing ride.

The one day muster is beginner friendly, and will likely be mostly walking.

Yes. You can book this at the time of booking the cattle muster by adding an extra night as an add-on (subject to availability). Or if you decide later that you’d like to add a night, simply contact us.

The show must go on! We still ride in light rain, so come prepared with raincoats and gumboots (for the saddling and feeding horses, the yard can get muddy). We have thresholds for when it’s too dangerous to ride (high temps, strong winds, torrential rain) and will make a call on a case by case basis, but generally we continue to ride with light rain.

What others are saying

Chapman's has been hands down the best trail riding experience that I've had in Australia, it is so worth the trip and realistically is not that far from either Sydney, Central Coast or Newcastle.

We wanted something that would give us the freedom to trot, canter, and really enjoy the Australian landscape on well-cared-for horses. Chapman Valley delivered that and so much more!

Not a typical nose-to-butt trail ride. Chapman valley horse riding was one of the best horse riding experiences I’ve had to date.

The horses are so well cared for, the saddles are good quality and comfortable, the staff and guides are lovely (and organised) and the food is great.

What sets Chapman Valley apart is the staff - they are absolutely wonderful! So friendly and welcoming, you get the feeling you're staying with family

These guys are fanatical about horse welfare and guest safety, the guides are helpful but never intrusive and cater for all levels of riders.

We had such a great time on the 3-day cattle muster. The accommodation was beautiful, guides we very friendly and accommodating, horses very well cared for.

I have never seen the Milky Way so clearly other than being in the middle of ocean. Do it!

A very nice quiet stay in a beautiful surroundings. Nice flat and grassy camp site and very friendly staff.

Amazing location and experience. No reception is GREAT. Ideal getaway. Lovely team and family run business.

Our family enjoyed horse riding, marshmallow roasting, taking in the wildlife and cows roaming, slowing down and 4WDing on the tracks.

I did the 3 day cattle muster and loved it! They take you all over the property and you get to ride and find cattle on all sorts of terrain.

The campsites were well-maintained and offered plenty of privacy. I loved hiking the nearby trails and enjoying the peace of nature.

Magical scenery, walking tracks, some 4wd tracks all of which are all marked out and easy to follow
