Endurance riding is a long distance timed race where the rider is required to cross a trail of natural terrain ranging between 80 to 160 km within a day. Shorter training rides are also held for new riders or those who may not have their horse to a suitable fitness level for the longer rides.

At times, these shorter races are also held for fit and experienced endurance horses and riders. Longer distances are also involved where the race continues for multiple days. It is mandatory for the horse to pass a check–up (vet check) by a veterinary at regular checkpoints; this vet check is necessary to ensure the horse as coping and is fit and healthy enough to continue the race.

The horse that crosses the finish line first along with the all-clear from the veterinary is declared the winner. Experienced winning riders usually complete the 180km race in 14 to 15 hours. Riders participate in Endurance Riding competitions with the aim of breaking their horse’s own personal record.

The Course

The course or trail is divided into several parts. After each section, the horses are examined by a veterinary where they are inspected for dehydration and ability to continue. Their respiration and pulse are also recorded. To be given the all clear, the horse must maintain a heart rate under that stipulated for the competition; usually around 60 bpm.

These limits vary from race to race and depend on the type of trail and weather conditions. The timer is still likely to fail the vet check. As per the rules, apart from riding the horse, the rider can even jog or walk along with the horse. counting up to the point the horse crosses the finish line, thus they must recover quickly, wasting as little time as possible. After the mandatory inspection, the horse must stay away from the course for an extra 20 to 45 minutes during which it is watered and fed.

Riders can complete the course at their own pace keeping in mind their horse’s capabilities. Obviously, if you run your horse ragged at the beginning of the race your horse will most likely fail the vet check. As per the rules, apart from riding the horse, the rider can even jog or walk along with the horse.

Equipment

Equipment used for endurance riding is less formal than in many other horse sports. Gear is selected based on functionality and comfort for both the horse and rider. This may include padded seating for the rider and woolen girths and breastplates for horses to help prevent rub-marks.
